چکیده

The properties of metallic clusters of various shapes, on the nanometer length scale, can be dramatically different from the corresponding bulk material due to their very large surface-to-volume ratio. The unique optical and mechanical properties of such nanoclusters hold great promise for the development of nanotechnology. Gold nanoclusters, for example, have found application in such diverse fields as nano-lithography [1], catalysis [2], nanobioelctronic devices [3], and ion detection [4]. It is therefore of great interest to study the behavior and stability of such nano-structures.

Surface-driven bulk reorganization of gold nanorods.

Molecular dynamic simulations are used to study the structural stability of gold nanorods upon heating. We show that the global stability of the rod is governed by the free energetics of its surface. In particular, an instability of surface facets nucleates a bulk instability that leads to both surface and bulk reorganization of the rod. The surface reorganizes to form new, more stable, {111} f...

Shape Transformation and Bulk Reconstruction in Heated Gold Nanorods

We use molecular dynamic simulations with a quasi-equilibrium heating to study the shape transformations of a nanometer scale gold rod of 2624 atoms. We find that instabilities in the initial {110} surface facets nucleate the shape transformation, leading to the formation of highly stable {111} facets, and causing the fcc interior of the rod to reconstruct to a new orientation consistent with t...

Differentiating surface and bulk interactions using localized surface plasmon resonances of gold nanorods.

We demonstrate a novel localized surface-plasmon resonance sensor that can distinguish surface binding interactions from interfering bulk effects. This is accomplished by utilizing the longitudinal and transverse plasmon modes of gold nanorods. We have investigated, both numerically and experimentally, the effect of change in background refractive index and surface binding on the two resonances...

LSPR and Interferometric Sensor Modalities Combined Using a Double-Clad Optical Fiber

We report on characterization of an optical fiber-based multi-parameter sensor concept combining localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) signal and interferometric sensing using a double-clad optical fiber. The sensor consists of a micro-Fabry-Perot in the form of a hemispherical stimuli-responsive hydrogel with immobilized gold nanorods on the facet of a cleaved double-clad optical fiber. T...

Biofunctionalization of Gold Nanorods: A Comparative Study on Conjugation Methods for Fabrication of Nanobiosensors

Gold Nanorods have promised variety of applications in biomedicine and biosensing. As a fruitful candidate for early detection and imaging, these plasmonic nanoparticles have been utilized for diagnostic applications of interest. However, prior to design and fabricate SPR-based nanobiosensors, the type and nature of conjugation with biomolecules would be of utmost importance. Herein, four strat...
